Special economic zone (SEZ)

« Back to Glossary Index

Geographical region within a territory that has economic and other laws that are more oriented towards a free-market economy than the typical laws in that country. National laws may be suspended within a special economic zone, with the aim of increasing foreign direct investment, boosting foreign trade, industrial development, and creating jobs. SEZ includes a wide range of more specific zone types, such as free trade zones (FTZ), export processing zones (EPZ), free zones (FZ), industrial parks or states (IE), free ports, urban entrepreneurship zones, and others.
